Diamond Pet Foods Statement

Diamond Pet Foods, manufacturers of Taste of the Wild™ dog and cat foods, recently had a lawsuit filed against us for “false advertising” and other baseless charges.

The Class Action lawsuit claims that Taste of the Wild™ has levels of arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium, and Bisphenol A (BPA) that were undisclosed to consumers. Because independent 3rd party testing shows our Taste of the Wild™ Food to not contain detectable levels of arsenic, mercury, lead, and cadmium, using Environmental Protection Agency approved methods and equipment, we believe the lawsuit’s claims are baseless. The tiny amounts of the named substances being put forward are naturally occurring, safe and common in human and animal diets.

This lawsuit is based on findings from the Clean Label Project, a group that awards star ratings to foods based on testing done in a lab owned by their own executive director. The lab’s findings are released only to companies that pay a fee, and sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Q. Why is arsenic in my dog’s food? Isn’t that bad? (Also asked for lead, cadmium, and mercury).

A. Elements such as arsenic are naturally present in the environment — in the soil, water and food ingredients. Our food is safe and meets, or exceeds, all state and federal regulatory standards. We can assure pet owners our food is safe to feed their pet.

Q. What is acrylamide, and why is it in my dog’s food?

A. Acrylamide is a chemical that can form in some foods (like potatoes) during high-temperature cooking processes, such as frying, roasting and baking. Acrylamide in food forms from sugars and an amino acid that are naturally present in food; it does not come from food packaging or the environment. The FDA does not recommend avoiding foods that have been fried, roasted or baked.

Q. Is there bisphenol (BPA) in my dog’s food?

A. Our Diamond pet foods and Taste of the Wild™ bags are BPA-free. The Taste of the Wild™ canned dog foods were tested and found to contain non-detectable levels of Bisphenol (BPA).

Q. Do you test for pesticides in your food ingredients?

A. We require vendors to test for pesticides and industrial contaminants. If you'd like to learn more about our food safety program, you can visit our website at https://www.tasteofthewild.com.au/quality-composition/food-safety/

Q. What are you going to do to get heavy metals out of your food?

A. Just like with human food, these elements are naturally occurring in food ingredients. If the levels in pet food fall below the FDA guidelines, they are safe to feed your pets. The pet food we produce fall well below the FDA limits. Whether it’s human food or pet food, there is not any method for removing naturally occurring elements found in natural ingredients such as meats, vegetables or legumes.

Q. Why aren't you doing anything to keeping my pet safe from these harmful elements?

A. We work hard to ensure the quality and safety of our products for your pets. We continually monitor our food sources and processing. All of our products are manufactured under our “Test and Hold Program” in which safety tests are conducted by a certified, independent laboratory. Laboratory testing is done on every batch of our products in every plant we operate. Each week we perform thousands of these tests to make sure the safety and quality of our products meet federal, state and Diamond pet food's standards.

Q. How does your food compare to the acceptable FDA levels?

A. Any trace elements detected in our food are extremely low and fall well within FDA guidelines. We proactively consult with FDA regularly and rely on them to provide guidance. This helps us ensure the production of safe, high-quality food for your pets.

Q. Why are your foods over the EPA drinking water standards for heavy metals?

A. Elements get absorbed in the body differently through foods compared to water. It is inaccurate to compare trace amounts found in food and regulated standards by the FDA compared to drinking water standards regulated by the EPA.
